The Gliders of the 82nd Airborne were canvas and wood, unpowered planes with minimal flight control. Several were towed at a time by larger planes and dropped men and equipment silently behind enemy lines. Landing without power was treacherous and stumps and obstacles on the ground tore through the flimsy craft.
